What Kind of Poker Table Have You Joined?
Different poker tables, although the same poker variant is played, will have different atmospheres or personalities. And such depends on the influence of the dominant players at the table. And knowing the atmosphere at the poker table is necessary so that the poker player can figure out the strategy that he will employ during the game.
In other words, the poker player should go beyond the value of his cards. Most poker players just hope that they will be dealt with good starting cards. They also hope that at the flop, they will form the best hands. They hope that they will outdraw their opponents. While hoping is a good thing, being trapped in just hoping is not enough to win a poker game. The poker player must know how to analyze the kind of poker table that he has joined.
Some poker tables have loose-passive games which are characterized by large pots and frequent showdowns. Some poker tables have loose-aggressive games which are also characterized by large pots because the players keep on betting and raising. Other poker tables have tight-passive games which have small pots because the players fear to bet and raise. And still other poker tables have tight-aggressive games which are dominated by professional poker players.
Each of these types of poker games demands a unique strategy from the poker player who intends to gain profits from a poker session. To identify the kind of game which is played at a poker table, one must ask these questions:
- How often are the raises? Is the raising cap often reached in each round? - lots of raises meant aggressive games
- How often are the showdowns? Frequent showdowns may mean that the players do not respect bets and bluffing an opponent out of a game will not work
- How many players pay just to see the flop? Many players who pay to see the flop could mean that the poker game is loose. Few players meant that the poker game is tight.
- How large or small is the pot size? Large pots usually meant loose players. And if the final bet is small when compared to the pot size, a poker player can take more risks. But if the pot size is small when compared to the final bet, the poker player must exercise caution and avoid playing mediocre hands.
- How do the players relate to each other? If the players are relaxed and seem to already know each other, then the poker could be tight-passive. Otherwise, then the competition is intense.
- How do the players react to raises? If a raise makes most of the players fold, then the poker game is tight. But if the raise goads other players to raise also, then the poker game is definitely loose-aggressive.
